Too late to talk about the New Year? Is it a stale topic after fifteen days?
Its difficult to tell. Some people don’t like to talk about these things at all while other go on weeks and weeks discussing their new year resolutions and the determination to follow them through “this year.”
This time of year is definitely exciting – everyone is buzzing with energy, trying to make the most of the beginning of Earth’s another circle round the Sun.
Well, I can’t say my life changed dramatically overnight as the clock struck twelve, but if it did for you, my best wishes.
I did not make any resolutions this year either – what’s the point, we all know which drain they go down…..
Instead, I made a new website and started a new blog.
This year, I want to start afresh, really. Not leaving my old life behind, afresh, but salvaging the one in front of me – taking pleasure in my present and doing something that proves to be useful.
So this year, I have decided to dedicate myself wholeheartedly to literature – reading and writing.
I have been in love with reading and writing for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, I would plead my mother to buy me more books and she would get angry asking me to read my course books. I spent more time on comics and story books that with those in my school curriculum. As a mother, she had all right to be angry.
Now, she keeps telling everyone about my love for books and how I “can’t seem to breathe without them.”
I won’t say I am a good reader (if there is something like that) – I was picky, very selective with titles and authors. But then I realized, I wasn’t exploring enough. I knew only selected writers and had read almost their entire collection more than once.
The remedy?
I began exploring the library – every fortnight, I borrow two books, one by an author, I know and another by an author, I haven’t read previously. If I don’t like the new author, I am glad I did not read them earlier and the other writer’s book is there to save me from further misery. If I like the new author, I am glad that I discovered someone new to swoon over.
Either way it’s a win-win.
But this was last year’s new thing.
Let’s talk about this year now.
I have decided to read not only for pleasure but to learn from it. And for the sake of accountability, I am going to post my learnings from readings on this blog. I hope someone finds it useful and if not, at least I will have learned more about any piece of writing or the author’s writing style more than I knew before writing about it.
In line with the calls to boycott ageism and cultural difference, I have decided to read every work I can lay my hands on, old and new. As the saying goes, a good piece of writing is never too old to be read. I’ll be diving into classics as well as contemporary texts. Also, since my upcoming novel is a fantasy adventure story, I will try to focus on that genre a little more than the other.
What?
Bored already?
Can’t say I am terribly sorry – had to give you guys an overview.
Maybe we can all learn from this too…
Don’t preach too much, don’t talk too much either…
Reading is always better.
